Surface Preparation Assessment Workflow
Systematic evaluation of concrete floor condition before starting any grinding or coating project. Determines the right approach and tooling needed.
Steps
- 1
Visual Survey
Walk the entire floor noting: existing coatings, stains, cracks, joints, embedded objects, moisture signs, and overall condition. Mark problem areas with chalk.
- 2
Hardness Testing
Test concrete hardness in 5+ locations using Mohs scratch kit. Record PSI estimates. Note any variation across the floor (common in large pours).
Mohs scale to PSI (approximate):\n3 = 2000-2500 PSI (very soft)\n4 = 2500-3500 PSI (soft)\n5 = 3500-4500 PSI (medium)\n6 = 4500-5500 PSI (hard)\n7+ = 5500+ PSI (very hard)
- 3
Moisture Testing
Perform plastic sheet test or calcium chloride test. Record MVER or RH%. Determine if moisture mitigation is needed before proceeding.
- 4
Flatness Check
Check floor flatness with 10-foot straight edge. Measure lippage at joints. Determine if leveling is needed before finish grinding.
Flatness standards:\nFF25: Standard commercial\nFF35: Retail/office\nFF50: Warehouse/forklift\nFF100: Specialty (broadcast studios)
- 5
Scope Definition
Based on assessment, define: required surface profile (CSP), number of grinding passes, tooling needed, estimated timeline, and special considerations.
Output document should include:\n- Floor area and zones\n- Hardness map\n- Moisture status\n- Existing conditions\n- Recommended approach\n- Tooling list\n- Timeline estimate
- 6
Client Communication
Present findings to client with photos. Explain any additional work needed (crack repair, moisture mitigation, leveling). Get approval before starting.
