Concrete Lippage Removal Workflow
Process for removing lippage (height differences between concrete slabs) using diamond grinding. Covers assessment, tool selection, technique, and verification.
Steps
- 1
Lippage Assessment
Use straight edge or laser level to identify and measure lippage. Mark high spots with chalk. Record maximum height difference.
Acceptable lippage:\n- Polished floor: < 1/32 inch (0.8mm)\n- Coated floor: < 1/16 inch (1.5mm)\n- Industrial: < 1/8 inch (3mm)
- 2
Tool Selection
For lippage > 3mm: use aggressive metal-bond segments (16-25 grit). For 1-3mm: medium segments (30-40 grit). For < 1mm: fine segments (60-80 grit) or cup wheel.
Pro tip: Dont use your polishing segments for lippage removal. The uneven pressure will destroy them.
- 3
Grinding Technique
Focus on high spots only. Use edge of grinding head for precision. Make multiple light passes rather than one aggressive pass. Check progress every 2-3 passes.
Technique:\n- Angle machine slightly toward high spot\n- Slow forward speed (half normal)\n- Overlap passes by 75%\n- Vacuum between passes to see progress
- 4
Feathering
Once lippage is within tolerance, feather the ground area into surrounding floor. Gradually widen passes to avoid creating a visible transition line.
- 5
Verification
Re-check with straight edge. Verify lippage is within spec across entire treated area. Mark any remaining spots for additional passes.
Pro tip: Check from multiple directions. Lippage can hide depending on your angle of measurement.
