SEO Keyword Clustering Workflow
Process for grouping keywords into topic clusters based on search intent and SERP overlap. Creates content architecture that ranks for multiple terms per page.
Steps
- 1
Keyword Collection
Gather all target keywords from: seed brainstorm, competitor analysis, Google Search Console, and keyword tools. Aim for 200-500 keywords per clustering session.
Sources:\n- Seed keywords (your products/services)\n- Competitor rankings (Serper/Ahrefs)\n- GSC queries (existing impressions)\n- People Also Ask expansions\n- Related searches
- 2
Intent Classification
Classify each keyword by search intent: informational (how to), commercial (best/review), transactional (buy/price), or navigational (brand).
- 3
SERP Overlap Analysis
For each keyword pair, check if they share 3+ results in top 10. If yes, they belong in the same cluster (Google considers them the same topic).
Pro tip: This is the key insight: if Google shows the same pages for two keywords, one page can rank for both. No need for separate pages.
- 4
Cluster Formation
Group keywords with high SERP overlap into clusters. Each cluster = one page/article. Name the cluster by its highest-volume keyword.
Good cluster: 5-15 keywords with shared intent\nBad cluster: 50+ keywords (too broad, split it)\nOrphan: keyword with no overlap (needs its own page)
- 5
Content Architecture
Map clusters to URL structure. Identify pillar pages (broad clusters) and supporting pages (specific clusters). Plan internal linking between related clusters.
- 6
Priority Scoring
Score each cluster by: total search volume, competition level, business value, and content gap (do we already rank?). Prioritize high-value gaps.
Priority formula:\nScore = (Volume x Business Value) / Competition\nHigh score + no existing content = write first
