Epoxy Coating Removal Process Workflow
Step-by-step process for removing epoxy, paint, or adhesive coatings from concrete floors using diamond tooling. Includes tool selection, technique, and troubleshooting.
Steps
- 1
Coating Assessment
Identify coating type (epoxy, polyurethane, paint, adhesive) and thickness. Test adhesion strength by trying to chip with a scraper. Measure total area.
Coating types by difficulty:\n- Thin paint (<2mm): Easy\n- Standard epoxy (2-5mm): Medium\n- Industrial epoxy (5mm+): Hard\n- Polyurea: Very Hard
- 2
Tool Selection
Choose between PCD scrapers (fast but aggressive) and diamond segments (slower but more controlled). PCD for thick coatings, diamonds for thin or when preserving surface matters.
Pro tip: PCD removes 10x faster than diamonds but can gouge soft concrete. Test a small area first.
- 3
Machine Setup
Mount selected tooling. Set RPM to low-medium range (400-600 for PCD, 500-800 for diamond). Ensure dust collection is connected and working.
- 4
Removal Passes
Work in overlapping passes. Keep machine moving — stopping creates divots. For thick coatings, take multiple shallow passes rather than one deep pass.
Pro tip: If coating melts/smears instead of chipping, reduce RPM and increase water (if wet grinding).
- 5
Surface Prep After Removal
Once coating is removed, switch to standard diamond segments for surface profiling. Target CSP 2-3 for new coating adhesion.
- 6
Quality Verification
Check for remaining coating in low spots and edges. Verify surface profile with replica tape or visual comparison chart.
