Dust Control System Setup Workflow
Proper setup procedure for dust collection during concrete grinding. Covers equipment selection, hose routing, filter maintenance, and OSHA compliance.
Steps
- 1
Equipment Selection
Match dust collector CFM rating to grinder size. Rule: collector CFM should be 1.5-2x the grinders dust port CFM requirement.
Typical requirements:\n- Small grinder (single head): 200-300 CFM\n- Medium (3-head): 400-600 CFM\n- Large (4-head planetary): 600-1000 CFM\n- Remote/ride-on: 1000+ CFM
- 2
Hose Connection
Connect hose to grinder shroud. Ensure tight seal — any air leak reduces suction dramatically. Use hose clamps, not tape.
Pro tip: A 1-inch gap in the hose connection can reduce effective suction by 50%. Seal everything.
- 3
Pre-Filter Check
Inspect HEPA filter condition before starting. Check for tears, excessive dust loading, or moisture damage. Replace if airflow is noticeably reduced.
- 4
Shroud Adjustment
Adjust grinder shroud height so it barely clears the floor (1-2mm gap). Too high = dust escapes. Too low = drags and reduces grinding efficiency.
- 5
Test Run
Run grinder for 30 seconds and check for visible dust escape. If dust is visible, check: shroud seal, hose connections, filter condition, and CFM adequacy.
- 6
OSHA Compliance Check
Verify system meets OSHA Table 1 requirements for silica dust exposure. Document: equipment used, filter type (HEPA), and maintenance schedule.
OSHA Table 1 requirements for floor grinders:\n- Vacuum with HEPA filter\n- Shroud around grinding head\n- Operator must not see visible dust\n- Filter cleaned per manufacturer schedule
